Abstract
M.Ed. (Education)
Due to the shortage of trained teachers in scarce subjects
people with professional qualifications have had to be recruited
from the industry to teach students. Although
these people have the required subjeqt knowledge, they
definitely lack the necessary didactical skills or methodology
of education. This situation places the teaching
(teachers at an institution) profession under tremendous
pressure as it falls on the practicing profession's
shoulders to train the teachers in the necessary skills
that they are lacking. It must also be remembered that the
number of students are increasing every year and that
teachers and lecturers cannot be taken out of their classes
for further training.
In this study it has been found that teachers and lecturers
without professional teaching qualifications experience
various problems when entering their career. The problems
experienced can be expressed as follows:
* problems with integration;
* socialising;
* planning and organising routine tasks; * teaching techniques;
* establishing relationships;
* "cold shoulder" treatment that the beginners receive from
the more experienced teachers.
It has also been found that the institution concerned experiences
problems in providing in-service-training to
these unqualified teachers or lecturers.
Factors such as overfull syllabuses, loaded timetables, few
available teaching posts, financial pressure and the fact
that no-one is directly involved with in-service-training,
can be seen as barriers in the successful implementation
of in-service-training at an institution. However,
problems concerning the establishing of relationships,
and stress can only be overcome with an effective in-service-
training programme.
It is also important to first take cognisance of the
lecturers and teachers needs before a programme for inservice-
training is compiled. Information which is, not
aimed at the needs of the personnel would be in vain and
a waste of time and energy. However, it is not only the
needs of the staff, but also the needs of the school or
college that must be considered when planning an in- service-training programme.
