Abstract
In this study the eleven editions of the Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) (Afrikaans word list and spelling rules) were compared in terms of the way they handled pejorative language. The study stemmed from the method of work explained in the preliminary pages of the AWS11, where the criteria for the inclusion of words in the glossary determined, among other things, that such words should be socially, culturally and politically sensitive. These criteria corresponded closely with the Preface where it has been stated that each edition of the AWS could be seen as a reflection of the spirit of the times in which it was composed.
