Abstract

Diaspora tourism has emerged as a significant phenomenon within the global tourism landscape, driven by individuals' desire to reconnect with their ancestral roots and cultural heritage. With a considerable portion of the global population residing outside their countries of origin, understanding the complexities of their travel motivations and experiences is essential. This study explores the specific context of Cameroonian diaspora members residing in Gauteng, South Africa, examining their patterns and experiences of leisure travel to their homeland. Utilising a quantitative research approach, the study employed surveys to gather primary data from a diverse sample of 379 Cameroonians living in Gauteng, South Africa. This methodological framework facilitated a systematic investigation into the factors influencing their travel decisions and the socio-cultural and economic impacts of their travels. The data were collected using the online and face-to-face techniques and were captured and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. By generating descriptive and inferential statistics, key findings indicate that the Cameroonian diaspora is diverse, with motivations for travel back home primarily stemming from a desire for cultural connection, family reunification, and participation in specific leisure activities that strengthen their ties to Cameroon. The study identified various push and pull factors affecting their travel decisions and highlighted the types of leisure experiences, such as cultural events, social gatherings, and interaction with local traditions, that are central to their visits. In summary, this thesis contributes valuable empirical evidence to the existing body of knowledge on diaspora studies and tourism, offering a nuanced understanding of the motivations, behaviours, and impacts of Cameroonian diaspora tourism. The findings hold practical implications for policymakers, tourism stakeholders, and community leaders in Cameroon, providing insights to develop targeted strategies that can effectively leverage the potential of diaspora tourism for sustainable development and enhanced cultural exchange.
