Abstract
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are an important part of the South African economy, and it is particularly the small businesses that show potential for growth. Therefore, they are the focus of this study. However, very few small enterprises have the skills or relevant experience to grow and thus never manage to exceed the first phase of their business life cycle. Investigating growth strategies such as entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has consequently become critical for the growth and competitiveness of small enterprises.
