Abstract
The digital magazine landscape undergoes continual transformation, shaping content creation and consumption. This study delves into the dynamics of South African digital magazine design by examining five local publications and contrasting them with the international trends embodied by Nylon magazine. The research explores the role of design principles in the evolving digital environment.
This study analyses digital magazine design in the South African industry. Magazines, selected purposefully from the lifestyle category on Magzter based on popularity, serve as objects for analysis. These magazines are: Sarie, Rooi Rose, Woolworth’s Taste, Home Owner, and Condé Nast House & Garden. The research then compares South African digital magazine trends with international best practices, particularly referencing Nylon and Sarie digital magazines. Sarie was chosen for this because it features a fully bespoke online magazine, which was then compared to Webby-award winning digital magazine, Nylon.
South African digital magazines are analysed across graphic and interaction design elements, shedding light on typography, photography, illustration, video, audio, and interactive features. Insights from the model of Nylon magazine provide lessons for enhancing design practices, user engagement, and adaptation to digital trends. It is found that Sarie magazine, while capable of delivering a tailored digital experience, faces challenges in maintaining its distinct identity within the Netwerk24 platform.
The comparison between Sarie and Nylon digital magazine indicated a necessity on the importance of individuality in design and a focus on target audience preferences. The study indicates the need for comprehensive digital experiences (such as a fully bespoke online digital magazine) which was indicated by the four magazines using only a PDF replica. It also indicates a need for design uniqueness tailored to specified target audiences to elevate South African digital magazines. Despite the challenges, these insights provide a roadmap for enhancing interaction and design in the evolving digital landscape.
