Abstract

Developments in education that emphasise child-centred, constructivist and problem-solving approaches, together with the opportunities offered by more powerful and user-friendly software, have resulted in a trend towards the integration of computers in education worldwide. While there is a growing body of evidence that the incorporation of computers in the educational setting offers opportunities for the enhancement of the learning environment, there is some doubt as to the effectiveness of these implementations in the South African context. This uncertainty has not been adequately investigated. In South Africa to date, computers have been found predominantly in the business sector, which actively seeks people with critical and creative thinking skills, rather than in schools. In this study I will attempt to determine the problems associated with the integration of computers as educational tools in a selected school in the Rustenburg district, and how these difficulties might be addressed.
