Abstract
There is a need for organisations to maximise internal project delivery outputs. One solution to improve project deliverables is through the utilisation of multidisciplinary project teams. These teams comprise of individuals with various backgrounds that come together to provide diverse expertise on a subject matter and project. The utility under study was the late delivery of projects, which often also end up being over budget, because of challenges related to multidisciplinary project teams.
The objective of this research was to understand the challenges associated with the execution of projects using multidisciplinary project teams and to establish how to optimally align and integrate such teams to better achieve their intended goal. A case study research methodology was chosen for this cause because the focus of the research was a single group of people within an organisation, and because of the nature of case study investigations, this would also provide a deeper understanding of the multidisciplinary project teams under investigation.
The findings highlighted the factors that have the greatest influence on integration, as well as uncovered the subfactors that are closely associated to them. Furthermore, the research indicated alternative options for addressing these issues. As a result, it is vital for organisations that have difficulties with multidisciplinary teams in the project environment to address these problems. It is recommended that organisations implement the numerous interventions highlighted in this research to enhance the teams’ cohesiveness, integration, and, ultimately, project success.
