Abstract
The objective of this research is to determine the obstacles encountered by learners in primary school in linking subjects to future careers. Career exploration and guidance begin from childhood, however, learners in primary school are left out. This study brings to attention the importance of teaching learners the relation between subjects and careers in an age-appropriate way. Career education is not part of the curriculum for grades 1 to 6 and there are no means through which these learners are instructed about career education. Learners experience challenges when in high school, they are required to select subjects that will shape their career. If they begin to link subjects to careers earlier in their academic journeys, they will have more years to plan for subject and career choices.
The research took place in a primary school located in Nellmapius, Gauteng province. The researcher employed purposive sampling to choose participants. Five girls and one boy were selected as participants. The qualitative approach was chosen for this research. Semi-structured interviews, a focus group and field notes were used for data collection. Data gathering and subsequent analysis followed a thematic approach. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. The theory used to understand the challenges learners encounter is cognitive developmental theory. The theory expresses that children indicate developmental sequences to understanding the processes of career choice and career attainment. From the theory, the children’s conception of career choice and attainment model was implemented. The study found numerous challenges learners encounter in linking subjects to future careers. The study also revealed that parents need guidance in supporting their children’s career aspirations.
