Abstract

Electric power distribution Infrastructure (Economics) - South Africa Local government - Management
South Africa is facing the challenge of ageing infrastructure special in Gauteng Metro. This study examines the impact of asset management on the infrastructure of municipalities in Gauteng's metropolitan areas, with a particular focus on the electrical distribution network. Amid rapid urbanization, Gauteng faces significant challenges, including ageing infrastructure, financial constraints, and inadequate planning, which lead to frequent service disruptions and increased maintenance costs. By integrating advanced asset management practices such as predictive maintenance and smart technologies, municipalities can enhance the reliability and efficiency of their services. The study employs a mixed methods approach within a Critical Realism framework, combining qualitative and quantitative data through case studies, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. Findings highlight the deteriorating condition of municipal infrastructure, emphasizing the necessity of proactive asset management to mitigate service disruptions and reduce long-term costs. Technological advancements and effective governance are identified as pivotal factors in improving asset management practices. The research concludes that comprehensive, data-driven, and technologically enabled asset management strategies can significantly enhance the performance and reliability of municipal infrastructure, thereby improving residents' quality of life and economic prospects. The study's recommendations include strategic prioritization of infrastructure maintenance, adoption of advanced monitoring technologies, and development of comprehensive asset management plans to ensure sustainable urban infrastructure.
