Abstract
Housing development strategies are critical for attaining sustainable and equitable urban expansion. These solutions try to alleviate urban population housing issues, such as inadequate housing, homelessness, and overpopulation. With increased urbanisation and a growing global population, effective solutions for promoting affordable housing, improving living conditions, and fostering inclusive communities are critical.
The process of putting housing projects into place can be difficult and fraught with obstacles. Financial limitations, political issues, and social and economic variables are a few examples of these difficulties. Any housing program's success depends on its ability to recognise and successfully handle these obstacles. Thus, the evaluation of the development methods guiding housing provision in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality is the focus of this research. The study aims to determine how the Municipality's housing policies accomplish sustainable development objectives.
The mixed-method research technique and case study method were used in this study. Data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews with respondents who were officials from the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the Department of Human Settlements. Descriptive statistics and thematic data analysis were used to analyse the collected data.
This research established that the City of Tshwane lacks affordable housing as the demand for housing has far exceeded the supply which leads to the growth of informal settlements and slums. The study also revealed that there is a need for comprehensive and integrated approach that involves coordination between government, private sector, civil society and residents.
