Abstract
This study investigated the implementation of land use management strategies in informal areas, focusing on the Siyathuthuka settlement within the Richmond Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. The primary aim of the research was to assess the effectiveness of land use management practices in informal settlements and understand the challenges and opportunities present in urban planning within these areas. Using the mixed methodology , data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis to gain insights into the dynamics of land use management in Siyathuthuka. The methodology involved purposive sampling to select relevant respondents and rigorous analysis of both quantitative survey data and qualitative interview transcripts.
The findings of the study highlighted the complexities of implementing land use management in informal settlements, including issues related to community awareness, stakeholder collaboration, and property ownership formalisation. The research underlined the importance of aligning land use management strategies with the specific needs of informal settlement residents to promote sustainable development and community empowerment.
Based on the results of study, recommendations are provided to improve land use management in Siyathuthuka and similar informal settlements. These recommendations focus on creating a holistic urban planning strategy, enhancing financial support mechanisms, raising community awareness, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. The study concludes by emphasising the potential for transforming informal settlements into organised, sustainable urban spaces that enhance community well-being and resilience.
Overall, the study contributes valuable insights regarding the challenges and opportunities of land use management in informal areas, offering practical recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, and community stakeholders. By integrating these findings into policy and practice, there is an opportunity to address the unique needs of informal settlements and promote sustainable development and environmental conservation in these communities.
