Abstract
This Research explores the challenges faced by the construction sector in South Africa concerning delays. It covers various important aspects such as general information, firm performance, reasons for delays, and the role of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in mitigating delays. The study aims to achieve three objectives: first, it aims to identify and understand the factors that negatively impact project completion in the construction industry, particularly those related to 4IR. Second, it aims to investigate the different reasons why projects get delayed in the construction sector. Finally, it suggests ways to strengthen and improve the construction industry in South Africa by making strategic use of 4IR tools
The research objectives and study questions are interlinked in this investigation. The first objective is connected to Research Question 1 (RQ1) and aims to identify the factors affecting project completion in the construction industry. The second objective is aligned with Research Question 2 (RQ2) and focuses on identifying the contributing variables to delays in the South African construction industry. The third and final goal, in line with Research Question 3 (RQ3), is to provide recommendations for improving and expanding the South African construction sector, with a particular emphasis on integrating 4IR tools.
A quantitative research design is used to gather and analyze numerical data on construction delays carefully. Purposive sampling is employed, along with a precisely defined target population of construction firm experts, to ensure the study's relevance. To gather specific information about project details, business performance, and causes of delays, structured questionnaires and interviews are among the data collection methods used.
The outcomes underscore how various elements impact construction and 4IR instruments and offer a comprehensive understanding of significant demographic observations and connections between concepts. This information is provided through both descriptive data analysis and correlation analysis. The report concludes with practical suggestions that tackle adverse effects, identify the reasons for delays, and offer measures to strengthen the industry with the help of 4IR tools
