This research focuses on the exploration and investigation of the quality of the subscales of the numerical scales of the translated Junior South African Individual Scale (JSAIS) GIQ-8 in Sesotho. It forms part of the panel research project which aims at investigating the cognitive development of children in a specific school from preschool to Grade 3. The research design was an explorative quantitative design. Data was collected by the administration of the translated JSAIS (GIQ-8) in a Sesotho class in a Soweto Primary School. A convenient sample was used as the school is part of a research project.
The project is in the third phase, which involves the analysis of data collected using the Rasch Model of Measurement in order to determine the quality of the numerical scale items of the translated Sesotho JSAIS. Items and ability levels were determined. Those that were misfit were also identified, which might provide the opportunity to be further investigated or eliminated. The overlapping items were identified, which might indicate that different items be measured by a single construct and will be investigated to diversify the constructs and avoid future overlapping. The Rasch Model of analysis seems to be a good method of determining the quality of the items of the translated Sesotho JSAIS GIQ-8 but the test will need adaptations in order to make it to be more user friendly.
