Abstract
In contemporary society, there is growing everyday concern over marital satisfaction. This is seen in at least one in two marriages in South Africa which result in divorce. Divorce frequently leads to worse health outcomes for people, including a higher mortality rate. As a result, knowledge of factors that can enhance marital satisfaction is required.
The aim of the study was to investigate the perceptions of married individuals on marital satisfaction.
The study was conducted using qualitative exploratory and descriptive design. Collection of data for this study was done over a period of two months. The study population included married individuals. The data for this study was collected through the usage of in-depth individual interviews. Data analysis was done using thematic analysis.
The study findings outlined that most participants have their own personal lived emotional experiences in relation to marriage and perceptions regarding marital satisfaction. Furthermore, participants revealed that marital satisfaction is influenced by moral values and goals in marriage and that the positive events and emotions affect the marriage. Additionally, the participants also highlighted that there are factors that contribute to marital dissatisfaction; however, participants pointed out that individuals use different coping strategies in their marriages. Participants went on to propose strategies to be used by couples to improve and maintain marital satisfaction.
Marital satisfaction is very crucial in ensuring peace and stability in a relationship. Couples should also strive for the best.
