Abstract
Background and Problem: While global trends highlight the potential of digital tools to revolutionize project delivery, local adoption is inconsistent. This study assesses the factors influencing the acceptance and use of digital technologies among South African construction entities to provide a roadmap for overcoming this stagnation.
Methodology: The study employed a purely quantitative research design. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire distributed to a convenience sample of 120 construction professionals (including architects, engineers, and contractors) in the Gauteng province, resulting in 112 valid responses. Statistical analysis techniques, including Mean Item Score (MIS) for ranking and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) for construct identification, were utilised to ensure empirical rigor.
Findings: The study investigated technologies such as BIM, drones, IoT, GIS, and cloud computing. Key findings reveal that while these technologies are recognized for enhancing efficiency and safety, their adoption is significantly hindered by high implementation costs, a lack of awareness, and a critical digital skills gap. Furthermore, a contradiction was noted in BIM adoption, which remains lower than expected due to structural and contractual barriers rather than a lack of perceived value.
Conclusion and Implications: The research concludes that fostering innovation requires more than just technical acquisition; it demands strategic leadership and regulatory support. Recommendations include the development of national digital mandates and targeted investment in professional upskilling. Overall, the findings help inform policy development and support stakeholders in fostering sustainable growth and technological resilience within the South African building sector.
