Abstract
The construction industry is a major source of pollution; however, owing to the rapid pace of construction development in Ghana, the pollution of the construction environment is becoming an area of concern. Construction activities (works) may generate pollution problems affecting homeowners, construction site owners, as well as the site workers. The aim of the study is to investigate the challenges involved in controlling construction site pollution in the Ghanaian construction industry. Hence, the objectives are to identify the challenges involved in controlling construction site pollution; explore measures to mitigate construction site pollution; identify the factors that cause pollution on construction site; and to determine the role of Government in controlling site pollution. A quantitative methodology approach was adopted; while the data collection for the study was through the use of questionnaire. A purposive sampling method was adopted because it comprises contacting a specific population with the relevant knowledge and experience of on- site activities. Two hundred (200) questionnaires were received from two hundred and thirty (230) sent out, representing a 86.95% response rate. Findings from the research were analysed using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis. In accordance with the rankings, the findings revealed that, the relevance of Government intervention in controlling construction site pollution was ranked first. Finding also revealed that the involvement of all stakeholders in the industry was ranked first according to the respondents. Hence, the study recommended that Government needs to focus more attention on all stakeholders in the industry to become involved and to develop, monitor and regulate guidelines for the assessment of levels of pollution. The study also recommended that technology combination and technological advancement to reduce pollution at the source are to be well established. In conclusion, it is believed that pollution due to construction can be significantly mitigated and reduced via proper enforcement, incentives and education along with strong stakeholder and Government participation.
