Abstract
Despite having Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programmes and Business Incubators (BIs), whose agenda is to support small businesses, South Africa has one of the highest Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) failure rates in comparison to other developing economies. The transport sector in South Africa consists of over 190 000 SMMEs that despite their contributions in terms of employment creation continue to face severe regulatory, market access and financial access challenges among other problems. An aggregator model seeks to bring together many enterprises, including SMMEs, that provide similar services or products to operate under a single, shared information platform and brand to enhance market access opportunities and benefits from bargaining powers that come with increased scale of operation. Very little research could be found that addresses how the aggregator model could function within existing BI and ESD models and whether South African SMME transporters operating in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector could benefit from operating within these enhanced aggregator models...
