The basis of this study is to analyse the role of OR Tambo International Airport, its contribution to local tourism development and the potential impacts of the planned aerotropolis development. The objectives include establishing the manner in which the airport has contributed to the growth of tourism enterprises in Ekurhuleni, the planning dynamics of the aerotropolis and its alignment to local tourism planning and the potential impacts of tourism development in Ekurhuleni.
The literature review focuses mainly on the link between airports and tourism planning, the economic impact of airports on tourism and the role of stakeholders. The mixed methods research design is employed to achieve the objectives of the study. The data is gathered through surveys with accommodation establishments, documentary analysis, attendance at a conference and the State of the City Addresses and a key stakeholder interview.
The study highlights that airports are important centres of economic growth and play a critical role in tourism growth. The characteristics of tourism SMME in Ekurhuleni are discussed in detail and it emerges that the main challenge that they face is lack of support from the municipality. Currently the municipality is in the process of revitalising the tourism sector of Ekurhuleni and this process will be guided by the Ekurhuleni Tourism Strategy. The municipality has recognised the importance of ORTIA and therefore its plans for tourism development are aligned to those of the aerotropolis. Ultimately the appropriate development of tourism in Ekurhuleni will result in potential employment and entrepreneurial opportunities thus contributing to economic growth.
