Abstract
Caregivers’ experiences raising children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are multidimensional and multifaced. Caring for a child diagnosed with autism can be challenging for caregivers, especially those with limited knowledge about autism spectrum disorder. The study aimed to understand the lived experiences of caregivers living in a South African township setting and raising children diagnosed with ASD. The study used an interpretative qualitative research approach, where data was collected using face-to-face and online semi-structured interviews, in which an interview guide was used. Eight participants were selected using purposive sampling from a township in Gauteng Province. South Africa and interviewed for the study. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA). The researcher adhered to the following ethical considerations :ethical approval, informed consent, confidentiality, and Anonymity during the research. The research findings suggest that caregivers in South African townships have several challenges when raising children with diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder .These challenges highlight the importance of early diagnosis, enhanced support, and financial aid to mitigate the burden experienced by caregivers within these communities.
