Abstract
This study explored the nuanced experiences of adolescents on social networking sites (SNS), addressing the growing concerns surrounding their psychological and social dynamics within the digital landscape. The problem statement underscores the need to understand how adolescents navigate SNS interactions amidst concerns about addiction, emotional well-being, and fragile social relationships. The aim of the study was to gain insight into adolescents' psycho-social experiences on SNS, examining the psychological effects, social dynamics, and support systems shaping their digital experiences. Drawing upon a conceptual framework grounded in adolescent psychology and digital media studies, the study adopted a phenomenological approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with five adolescent participants to explore their perspectives, perceptions, and experiences on SNS.
Thematic content analysis of interview data revealed three main themes: psychological effects, social effects, and support systems. Within the psychological effects theme, adolescents’ express concerns about addiction, emotional turbulence, and fear of the implications of SNS on their future, highlighting the impact of SNS on their psycho-social well-being. In the realm of social dynamics, adolescents navigate complex relationships, peer influences, and identity construction within the digital sphere, grappling with issues of authenticity and social comparison. Furthermore, adolescents articulate the need for support systems, including mentorship, digital detox, and parental involvement, to promote healthy SNS usage and mitigate negative outcomes.
The value of the study lies in its qualitative depth and richness, offering insights into the multifaceted experiences of adolescents on SNS. By centring adolescents' voices and perspectives, the study provides a nuanced understanding of their digital realities, informing future research, policy, and practice in educational psychology and digital media studies. The study underscores the importance of addressing the psychological and social implications of
