Orientation: Warehousing and distribution organisations are affected by the current market volatilities, with increased demands on leadership and employees to achieve financial, strategic, and operational objectives. This scenario — together with the potential negative effect of management’s and employees’ perceptions and experiences of organisations’ performance management systems — adversely affects organisations’ and individuals’ performance. Performance management systems as an important human resources function are often subjective, unhelpful, demotivating, and a waste of time by management and employees. Organisations and leadership must ensure employees achieve organisational and individual performance objectives by means of an effective performance management system.
