M.A. This study is not an analysis of the nature of the Tswana novel. Malope (1983:33) has already dealt with this aspect, as well as the aspects of a novel that critics agree are the most important. As most of the Tswana novels have been written by male writers, the primary focus of this study is to assess the portrayal of a -female character in the Tswana novel, especially by the male writer.
