Abstract

This study was conducted as an effort to investigate how, through a community initiative, road accidents in Mamelodi could be addressed. Irresponsible road usage has led to many accidents which have thus far killed many innocent people, including school children. In this study the participants will be selected from the households whose family
members or loved ones were involved in the road accidents of Kubone Street. This
study will also have a qualitative research design. A qualitative research design will
enable the researcher to pursue multiple methods of data collection in order to explore
the focus of the inquiry. This multiple methods of data included observations, in-depth interviews and groupinterviews. Through these methods a deeper understanding and clarity concerning the problem investigated were gained. An important contribution of the study is that it has encouraged a learning process in which the people participated, and were encouraged to take the initiative from the start. By doing so, they acted positively and responsibly towards issues affecting their environment, and this in return has led to community building and development. Community building will then bring them together and turn the negative attitudes of road users into a positive one.
