This study is mainly concerned with a comparison and evaluation of the financial performance of the individual permanent building societies for the period 1974 to 1977. For this purpose it was necessary to establish a criterion according to which building societies of different sizes could be compared with each other. This served as a basis for an in depth analysis in terms of which the most important causes of differences in
performance between building societies could be identified. In addition to the comparison and e valuation of the financial performances of the individual building societies, a performance evaluation technique was developed in terms of which financial problems of a building society's branch offices can be identified timeously.
