Quality management (QM) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of manufacturing industries. In South Africa, the manufacturing sector faces increasing pressure to improve product and service quality while maintaining cost efficiency. Despite various quality initiatives, many firms struggle with implementing effective QM frameworks that ensure continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. This study aims to develop a quality management framework for the effective delivery of products and services in the South African manufacturing industry. By evaluating QM application, challenges, and benefits, this research seeks to provide a structured approach to enhancing quality performance. The manufacturing industry in South Africa is a crucial economic driver, yet it faces quality-related challenges that hinder efficiency and sustainability. Understanding the factors influencing QM application is essential to overcoming these challenges and enhancing product and service quality. This study addresses the need for a structured QM framework that aligns with global best practices. While previous studies have explored QM in various contexts, there is a paucity of research focusing on a holistic QM framework tailored to the South African manufacturing sector. The study also identified driving factors for QM application, determined the impacts of QM on product and service delivery, assessed the barriers to QM implementation, determined sustainable benefits of QM application, and evaluated the role of ISO 9001 certifications in enhancing quality management in South African manufacturing industry. A quantitative research approach was adopted utilising a well-structured questionnaire to collect primary data from manufacturing industry stakeholders. Owing to logistical constraints preventing inclusion of the entire population, a stratified random sampling approach was used. The total number of the questionnaires distributed was 400, while 210 responses, which represents approximately 53% response rate were retrieved. The collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequency distribution, mean item score, standard deviation, and exploratory factor analysis. Research findings revealed that the primary factors for QM application in product and service delivery are a focus on client and customer needs, team encouragement and motivation, relationships among team members, skills and knowledge sharing, and work quality. The impacts of QM application include efficient resource use, improved customer satisfaction, enhanced working environments, and vi increased work efficiency. Barriers to QM application were identified as poor knowledge of processes and requirements, lack of management commitment, inadequate worker commitment, a shortage of trained workers, and poor organisational culture. Sustainable benefits of QM application include financial growth, employee development, cost and time savings, enhanced cooperation and teamwork, improved performance and productivity, and customer satisfaction. Additionally, ISO 9001 certifications contribute to smoother production processes, higher product quality, company growth, and greater organisational commitment and dedication. The findings emphasise the need for management commitment, good relationships among employees, and information sharing among workers to ensure the effective application of QM. Manufacturing firms should integrate ISO 9001 standards while fostering a quality-driven culture to enhance efficiency and competitiveness. Policymakers should support QM adoption through incentives and industry-wide quality initiatives. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by developing a tailored QM framework for the South African manufacturing sector. It provides empirical evidence on the drivers, barriers, and benefits of QM, offering practical recommendations for enhancing quality performance. The proposed framework serves as a strategic guide for manufacturing firms to implement QM effectively and achieve sustainable competitive advantage.
