Recently several new antibiotics, of which substituted carbohydrates form an integral part,
have been isolated. Although the synthesis of this class of compounds has been studied
extensively a satisfactory synthesis of homochiral substituted tetrahydropyrans has not yet
been reported.
This study was directed towards the development of palladium catalysed stereoselective
transformations of unsaturated carbohydrates with the aim of introducing carbon
substituents into the 1- and 4-positions of these compounds. Special attention was also
