Abstract
The overall purpose of this research was to determine if swimmers ear infection (otitis externa) is present in professional Self-Contained-Underwater-Breathing-Apparatus (SCUBA) divers at Sodwana Bay, KwaZulu Natal in South Africa and whether Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( P. aeruginosa) was the prevalent causative agent. It was further aimed to analyse the pool and ocean water where divers train and SCUBA dive for the presence of P. aeruginosa. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and whole genome sequencing, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis and multilocus sequence testing (MLST) of all the P. aeruginosa isolates was obtained in this study.
