Abstract
Siswati literary texts are still developing, particularly in the field of dramatic literature. Many existing dramas lack thematic variety and well-written plot structures, making it difficult to interpret their narratives and identify key plot elements. Some Siswati drama plots appear fragmented, with events presented in a disorganised manner, highlighting a gap in knowledge and skills related to crafting engaging and structurally sound plots. This study critically analyses the plot structures of three Siswati dramas, titled, Kwahlwa Emini, Kutawuba Njalo!, and Intfola. It uses critical discourse analysis, structural theory, and narrative theory as its theoretical foundations. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies a textual analytical framework to examine and interpret the selected dramas. The analysis follows key plot development stages, including preliminary exposition, starting point, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The study also explores narrative techniques such as flashback, foreshadowing, and dialogue, emphasising the richness of diction, originality of expression, and register in the Siswati language. Furthermore, it investigates various methods for analysing drama plots, offering insights into local cultures and their societal impact. This study has shown that in the drama titled; Kutawuba Njalo! the plot is not coherent, such that the elements of the plot are not addressed properly. These findings will be valuable to Siswati authors by enhancing their writing skills, while also improving readers’ ability to comprehend and critically analyse dramatic narratives.
