Abstract
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is rapidly transforming educational practices globally, presenting unique challenges, particularly for rural public primary schools in South Africa. This study examines how female principals, as transformative leaders, navigate the integration of 4IR technologies in these under-resourced contexts. Guided by critical feminist theory, the study explores the intersection of gender, leadership, and technological change, emphasising the resilience and innovation of female principals amidst systemic barriers such as patriarchal norms and infrastructural deficits. The study adopts an interpretivist paradigm and employs a qualitative exploratory phenomenological design to capture the lived experiences of 20 female principals selected through convenience sampling from rural public primary schools. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews and document analysis, with the hermeneutic cycle used for analysis.
The findings revealed that female school leaders are promoting technological advancements by integrating e-learning platforms, interactive whiteboards, Wi-Fi connectivity, and various digital tools into educational methods. Additionally, they organise and oversee professional development programmes, including training workshops, to enhance teachers' technological competencies. Despite these efforts, the study identified significant challenges faced by female principals, such as limited resources and resistance from both staff and parents. Nonetheless, the transition to digitised infrastructure has improved administrative efficiency, including attendance tracking and academic management. The study highlights a comprehensive leadership approach emphasising community participation, communication, collaboration, and teacher capacity building to address these challenges effectively. The study concludes by proposing a Rural 4IR Integration Framework to mitigate the barriers to technology adoption in rural schools. This framework aims to provide actionable strategies for overcoming resource constraints and resistance while fostering sustainable technological integration in education.
