Abstract
This research study aims to address the critical need for effective leadership frameworks within civil society organisations (CSOs) to expedite community development. The problem statement underscores the challenges CSOs face in navigating the complexities of community development, often hindered by a lack of cohesive leadership, insufficient organisational culture, and a dearth of effective networking strategies. To bridge this gap, the study proposes a holistic leadership framework that integrates Level 5 leadership principles, emphasises a positive organisational culture, and underscores key leadership traits and behaviours necessary for successful networking.
The research employs a qualitative approach to comprehensively explore a proposed leadership framework. Qualitative data is gathered through in-depth interviews with CSO leaders and different role players and stakeholders within a community, aiming to capture nuanced insights into existing leadership challenges and potential solutions.
Findings from the research study reveal a pressing need for transformative leadership within CSOs. The proposed leadership framework, rooted in Level 5 leadership principles, emerges as a robust solution to the identified challenges. It incorporates personal humility and professional will as foundational elements, fostering leaders who prioritise the collective success of the organisation and the communities they serve. The research highlights the positive impact of such leadership on organisational culture, emphasising transparency and innovation.
Further analysis of the research data underscores the significance of specific leadership traits and behaviours within a networked structure. Adaptability, empathy, and effective communication emerge as pivotal traits, enabling leaders to navigate the intricate dynamics of collaboration. Trust-building is identified as a crucial factor for successful networking within the civil society sector, with mutual trust forming the basis for effective resource and expertise sharing among CSOs.
The proposed framework provides a transformative roadmap for CSOs to become dynamic change agents. The research contributes valuable insights and practical recommendations, empowering CSOs to proactively address community needs and drive sustainable development initiatives.
