Abstract
This paper reports on a survey conducted to determine the University of Johannesburg’s
students’ awareness of various South African information acts. The issues addressed included
the knowledge and application of Protection of Personal Information, Regulation of
Interception of Communication-related Information, Promotion of Access to Information,
Financial Intelligence Centre Acts, in their information management needs. To present a
balanced view the study focused on first year Information and Knowledge Management
students as the profession entails information collection, dissemination and overall holistic
information management. The study identified that majority of students did not understand
information legislation and compliance prior to the intervention awareness. The study aims to
contribute by encouraging higher education institutions to develop their awareness around
information legislation and compliance.
