Abstract

This chapter examines the importance of blending heritage, culture, ecological systems and lifelong learning as strategies for sustainable urban development which are aimed at improving the lives of communities. The relationship between cultural heritage, community traditions and modern technological advances is explored under the umbrella of local economic development (LED). Local economic development, or community economic development (CED), is applicable to areas of social, economic, cultural and spatial economic growth focusing on the creation of jobs and wealth, improving the quality of life of everyone and overcoming the challenges of poverty and inequality. Lifelong learning emphasises its significance for local economies by enhancing the skill base, promoting equality and reducing social exclusion, fostering the growth of the learning industry and delivering broader social, economic and cultural benefits. Examining the impact of the Cradle of Humankind, a designated World Heritage Site in South Africa, provides an insightful perspective into how lifelong learning and sustainable urban growth merge. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site proves that the success of urban growth is achieved through urban planning initiatives which promote socio-economic inclusivity, cultural heritage and environmental preservation. This chapter maintains that lifelong learning is a cornerstone of cultural entrepreneurship. The study adopts a qualitative research design to develop the socio-economic impact assessment framework. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, local tourism operators and community members within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. This was complemented by a review of policy documents, strategic frameworks and tourism development plans. Thematic content analysis was employed to extract recurring themes and to identify patterns relevant to LED, skills transfer and sustainable tourism practices. In addition, sentiment analysis and word cloud visualisations were generated to gauge community perspectives and stakeholder engagement around lifelong learning, entrepreneurship and adaptability. Cultural entrepreneurship supports sustainable urban development through an integrated approach which balances cultural, economic, social and environmental objectives. Expanding the reach of cultural entrepreneurship through urban planning and support of the cultural entrepreneurship will assist in preserving heritage and cultural communities by actively contributing to contemporary economic and community development. The chapter presents an exploration of sustainable urban development from a cultural and entrepreneurial perspective, providing a solid foundation within the context of developing learning cities. This narrative advocates for stronger approaches to developing cultural entrepreneurship through education and lifelong learning1.
