Abstract
Chemistry is a central science that supports several degrees and
diplomas in the fields of Science, Health Sciences, Engineering,
and Technology. However, many students who do not have a
strong scientific background are often faced with the challenge
of having to grasp key concepts that often appear as abstract
concepts to them. Moreover, many students struggle with
basic calculations, while others can perform calculations but
simply cannot study theory or formulate answers to descriptive
Chemistry questions. This chapter, therefore, explores the use
of digital tools for the facilitation of the learning of Chemistry.
It evaluates the role played by digital technologies in helping
students who lack a scientific background to visualise and learn
key concepts. It further evaluates the ability of digital tools to
help students to learn descriptive chemistry more easily. The
role played by AI tools such as ChatGPT in helping students to
formulate answers to descriptive Chemistry questions is also
highlighted. Lastly, the overall impact of digital tools in making
the learning of Chemistry more enjoyable and in shifting from
mundane notebook and textbook learning is critically discussed.
